July 2009

Hi %%First Name%%

2009 is coming to an end, and this is the last time you’ll hear from us at GradX before 2010. It’s going to be a BIG year for SA. Even if you aren’t going to be directly involved in the FIFA World Cup you can still take advantage of the energy, excitement and knock-on financial benefits to get your career off to a great start. Success is more about your attitude than anything else, so whether you’re still looking for that perfect position or starting at your dream company in January make sure your attitude is right. Enthusiasm, dedication and a willingness to work hard and learn all you can is all you need to make 2010 work for you.

Graduates at work

Many graduates already in the workplace can attest to the fact that attitude is everything.

Raymond Ranta, ex-Tukkies student, says…

Raymond Ranta graduated from the University of Pretoria with a B Eng Mining degree. This lively, talented graduate is now a participant in AngloGold Ashanti’s management training programme. Find out how his enthusiasm has helped him become successful here.

Ask the experts

If you believe you’ve got a great attitude, but are struggling to get into interviews to show it to future employers, our experts can help you get your applications on track. This month’s featured question is:

Q: Hi. I have just recently completed my degree in BSc Biotechnology and I have been looking for a position for the past few months and nothing. Most of the companies regret me when I send applications. When I do get called for interviews I do not make it.
A: Don't lose heart just yet. It can take a bit of time to find employment after you graduate – that's perfectly normal. The fact that you are being called in for interviews is a good sign. Perhaps you just need to brush up on your interview skills a little. Go to www.GradX.net to find lots of articles about interviews and how to handle them. I also suggest you find yourself some part-time employment or do some volunteering to keep busy. These things will make sure you don't have a huge blank space in time on your CV after graduation, teach you soft skills that will make you a more valuable employee, and show an employer that you are willing to work and take some initiative and responsibility for your life and success.
